Australia's first Vietnamese-born Catholic bishop has been ordained in Melbourne.
Vincent Long Van Nguyen spent eight days on a 17-metre boat with almost 150 other people, as he escaped from communist-ruled Vietnam.
Thirty years later, the 49-year-old refugee has become the first Vietnamese born bishop in Australia.
He was ordained at St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne.
Bishop Long has served as a parish priest at Springvale in Melbourne and Kellyville in Sydney.
He has been appointed to the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
After his ordination, Bishop Long said he was proud to be Australian.
"The way I am a former refugee, stand before you is a testament to the fair go mentality that has shaped this great nation of ours," he said.
