TORRENTIAL rain and thousands of enemy soldiers stood in their way, but the Australian troops succeeded.
Today is Vietnam Veterans Day.
Originally known as Long Tan Day, the day commemorates the men of D Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966.
On August 18, 1966, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers battled more than 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation near the small village of Long Tan.
After four hours of fighting in torrential rain, the Australians prevailed. Eighteen soldiers were killed and another 24 were wounded.
It was the largest number of casualties in one operation since the Australian forces arrived just three months earlier.
The bodies of 245 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers were found on the battle field. Many more bodies had been carried away.
Members of the 6th Battalion returned to Long Tan in 1969 and raised a cross on the battle site.
Over time, more and more soldiers who fought in Vietnam adopted Long Tan Day as their day of commemoration and in 1987 Prime Minister Bob Hawke officially made August 18 Vietnam Veterans Day.
And so today we remember the efforts of all those men and women who served in Vietnam.
