3- Hoa Đào (Peach Blossom): Rất được ưa chuộng vào ngày Tết tại miền Bắc. Màu đào đỏ thắm là lời cầu nguyện và chúc phúc đầu xuân và được tin là sẽ mang lại nhiều điều tốt lành, đồng thời xua đuổi những tà ma hắc ám.
4- Hoa Vạn Thọ (Marigold): Màu vàng có hương thơm nhẹ, tượng trưng cho sự thành thật và thể hiện ước vọng cùng lời chúc “sống lâu trăm tuổi”.
5- Cây Quất - Tắc (Kumquat): Cây quất ngày Tết cần phải xum xuê, lá xanh tốt, quả vàng quả xanh chi chít thể hiện sự trù phú, hứa hẹn năm mới ăn nên làm ra, dồi dào sức sống, con cháu đông đảo quây quần.
6- Pháo đỏ (Firecrackers): Màu đỏ giúp xua đuổi tà ma vả mang lại niềm vui. Tiếng pháo nổ rền vang đồng loạt, xác pháo bay tung tóe khắp nơi trong ngày Tết sẽ tạo nên những hình ảnh đặc biệt, những cảm xúc mạnh mẽ khó phai mờ.
7- Bánh chưng & bánh tét (Chung and Tet cakes): Bánh chưng hình vuông mà bánh tét hình tròn gồm nếp, đậu, thịt heo, đựợc gói bằng lá chuối lá dong hay lá tre. Bánh chưng có lịch sử rất lâu đời, thể hiện tinh thần uống nước nhớ nguồn, nhớ công ơn sinh thành dưỡng dục của cha mẹ.
8- Mâm ngũ quả (The Five - Fruit Tray): Bày tỏ sự tôn kính đối với tổ tiên và ước vọng đời sống ấm no sung túc. Các loại trái cây trưng bày thay đổi chút ít tuỳ miền, cách chung là mảng cầu, dừa, đu đủ, xoài, trái sung, thơm … với ý tưởng “Cầu vừa đủ xài, sung sướng hoặc thơm danh”.
9- Câu đối (9- New Year couplets): Viết câu đối là một thú vui tao nhả, đặc biệt là vào lúc xuân về. Câu đối gồm 2 câu có chữ đối nhau, dùng diễn tả tình cảm, chúc tụng, bày tỏ ước mong… Câu đối có thể được dùng trang hoàng trong nhà hay treo ngoài ngõ.
Significant Elements in This Year’s Lunar New Year Garden
1- New Year’s Tree: A bamboo pole stripped of its leaves except for a tuft on top and decorated with red paper and clay bells, it is typically planted in the front yard and wards off evil spirits during the absence of the Kitchen Gods.
2- Mai Flower (Vietnamese Mickey Mouse Plant): A yellow flowering plant used for decoration during New Year that brings promotes prosperity and well-being for the family. The value of these flowers is determined by the number of petals - the more petals, the more expensive the flower.
3- Peach Blossom: The peach blossom is very special in the Lunar New Year because of its red colour, which is believed to bring luck and favourable opportunities throughout the year.
4 & 5- Marigolds and Kumquats: The marigold flowers are significant for celebration and decoration in the Vietnamese culture due to their beauty, scent and name. In Vietnamese, marigold means 'longevity'. The kumquat tree is a popular decoration as its many fruits symbolize the fertility and fruitfulness that the family hopes for the coming year.
6- Firecrackers: The most exciting element in the celebration of Lunar New Year is the lighting of firecrackers. These explosions are believed to drive off ghosts and evil spirits and leave good luck in their place. As thousands of households simultaneously partake in this fantastic part of Lunar New Year, the level of volume and excitement is incredible. This is the most emotional and memorable moment of the celebration.
7- Chung and Tet cakes: It is a square (for Chung) or round (for Tet) cake, wrapped in banana/bamboo/dong leaves and tied with laces of flexible bamboo slivers. It is a very rich food for the interior contains a filling of bean paste to which may be added small bits of pork meat, both fat and lean. Its shape is considered a symbol of the thankfulness of the Vietnamese people for the great abundance of the Earth.
8- The Five - Fruit Tray: The "five-fruit tray" on the ancestral altar symbolizes the admiration and gratitude to Heaven and Earth and their ancestors, and demonstrates their aspiration for a life of plenty. Five kinds of fruits which are chosen depend on the custom of each area such as banana, orange, finger citron, watermelon, kumquat in the North; custard-apple, coconut, papaw, mango, fig … in the South.
9- New Year couplets: Couplets are pairs of sentences or phrases of same numbers of words and were very popular in the old time. They are used to celebrate happy events as well as those to commemorate big occasions. During the Tet occasion, there are couplets at the side of the family altars, in the lounge rooms, in the yards or even at the entrance gates. Celebrating Lunar New Year is not complete without couplets.
